Building healthy soils without chemical fertilizers
Healthy soils make healthy plants and ecosystems better able to resist pests and disease. Cover crops and compost add nutrients, build soil structure, and help retain water, creating fertility. Rotating crops also enriches soils.
Controlling pests, disease and weeds through prevention first and without relying on toxic, synthetic chemicals
In addition to the nutrition boost to plants, healthy soils harbor an abundance of beneficial organisms that naturally fight disease. Cover cropping and crop rotations disrupt harmful insects, breaking their cycles and stopping repeat infestations. Beneficial insects and birds that prey on harmful insects are attracted by planting host plants and maintaining habitat. Weeds are controlled through crop rotation, tilling, hand-weeding, targeted crop watering through drip irrigation, and by flame-weeding, which burns off new weed growth.
